FORT MYERS, FL. Psoriasis is a skin condition that can cause silver scaly plaques to form on the skin, nails, and scalp. It affects 3 percent of the population. The cause of psoriasis is unclear, but it is characterized by inflammation caused by the dysfunction of the immune system.  This occurs because the overactive immune system speeds up skin cell growth. Normal skin cells completely grow and shed in a month. With psoriasis, skin cells do this in only three or four days. Instead of shedding, the skin cells pile up on the surface of the skin. Some report that psoriasis plaques itch, burn, and sting.  Although there is no known cure for psoriasis, a combination of medications and light therapy can control this skin condition.

Anais Aurora Badia, M.D., D.O., FSC founder, and medical director, and her team have been successfully treating psoriasis patients, including children, with a variety of options including the latest technology in narrowband type B ultraviolet (UVB) light therapy and excimer laser.  “Our goal is to offer patients of all ages the most advanced treatments in psoriasis,” said Badia.  “We believe that everyone has unique skin needs, and we will customize a treatment plan that can include a combination of topical treatments, oral medications, injectable treatments, narrowband UVB therapy, and the excimer laser.”

Narrowband UVB therapy is done through convenient lightbox therapy that includes different lightboxes for the body, hands, feet, and a hand piece for the scalp and stubborn patches. The lightboxes are safe for children as well as adults.

The excimer laser uses narrowband UVB light to deliver targeted high-dose therapeutic light right on the affected tissues while protecting healthy skin. This ensures the laser can deliver a high dose of treatment for longer remission and faster clearing than any alternative service. Each patient and condition varies in the number of treatments necessary and the time it will take to reach clearance. Most patients will initially require two treatments each week to clear their lesions. It may take 12-15 treatments to improve psoriasis. Most patients will then need maintenance treatments.

FSC offers an annual complimentary full-body skin check by appointment.  Mention the complimentary skin check when making an appointment.  Any skin concerns are evaluated at that time.

Narrowband UVB therapy and excimer laser appointments are available in select FSC offices.
