New in Town: Gulfport Super Gas

One of Gulfport's busiest intersections has a new gas station providing low priced fuel and excellent service.

On the corner of 49th Street and Gulfport Boulevard, Gulfport Super Gas is looking to offer low fuel prices and quality service.

Super Gas opened it's doors last week with a soft launch and is considering this week to be their grand opening week. They're currently offering free coffee for anyone who comes in to buy anything.

Ken Edwards, owner of Gulfport Super Gas, is, like his gas station, new to Gulfport. Coming from Ocala, Edwards was scouting for good locations to open up the Super Gas when he came upon the old BP station.

I just got lucky finding Gulfport. We came here primarily to look at the gas station and found out how great Gulfport is,” Edwards said.

Not only was the location ideal, but he liked the idea of moving to Gulfport, so he found a house to move into. The marina, in particular, that caught Edwards' eye immediately because of his love of sailing.

Before setting up shop, Edwards had a little work to do to get the gas station back in good condition. In addition to replacing the gas tanks and painting, The store had to get it's air conditioning replaced as well as the machinery that runs the refrigeration units, Edwards said.

“We should have the coldest beer in town since everything has been replaced,” Edwards said.

Before opening up Super Gas, Edwards was a horse trainer but running a convenience store and gas station is something that has been on his mind for while.

Edwards has been trying to run a different kind of gas station convenience store. With lots of healthy food and a boutique area, Edwards is looking to make Gulfport Super Gas unique when compared to other convenience stores. Edwards is also looking to the public for suggestions on items he should carry.

The Super Gas is less common than other gas stations like Texaco and Shell. There are currently only four in the Tampa Bay area, Edwards said. Not being one of the major gas players has advantages that pass on to residents of Gulfport though.

“It's unbranded, which allows us to keep our prices down,” Edwards said.

Currently, the premium fuel at Gulfport Super Gas is 5 cents below other gas stations in Gulfport, Edwards said.

“We will keep being the lowest price on the street, I'm sure of it,” Edwards said.

Gulfport Super Gas is open 7 days a week 6 a.m. to 11 p.m.
