(The Center Square) – Vice President Kamala Harris's comments on faith and women drew questions from an NFL Hall of Famer and two-time Super Bowl champion who is also well known for his outspoken religious convictions.

Harris, in a social media post Thursday afternoon, wrote, “One does not have to abandon their faith or deeply held beliefs to agree: The government, and certainly Donald Trump, should not be telling a woman what to do with her body.”

Just over 90 minutes after her post, Tony Dungy, among many, responded.

“Dear VP Harris:” his social media post began. “I hear you make this statement all the time. Exactly what ‘faith’ are you talking about when you say you don’t have to abandon it to support abortion? Are you talking about the Christian faith that says all babies are made in the image of God (Gen 1:26), that God places them in the womb (Jer 1:5) and that we should not take any life unjustly (Luke 18:20)? Are you talking about that faith or some nebulous, general ‘faith’ that says we’re good enough, and smart enough to make our own decisions? What ‘faith’ are you talking about?”

Dungy’s quotes are from the Bible in Genesis, Jeremiah, and Luke. A 2023 Gallup poll said 3 in 4 Americans identify with a specific religious faith, including 68% with a Christian religion, 33% Protestant and 22% Catholic.

Harris and Dungy are Baptists.

By Saturday morning, Harris’ comment had attracted more than 46,000 likes, 10,000 reposts and 17,000 comments. Dungy’s reply attracted more than 104,000 likes, 21,000 reposts and 9,200 comments.

Dungy, 68, is a retired NFL coach. Undrafted out of Minnesota, he played three seasons for Pittsburgh and San Francisco and coached in the league for 22 seasons. With Mike Ditka and Tom Flores, he is one of only three Pro Football Hall of Famers who won Super Bowls as a player and head coach.

The father of 11 and New York Times No. 1 best-selling author is even more widely known, however, for being passionate about his Christian faith. He's also seen regularly on Sunday nights as a studio analyst of NFL games.

Abortion has consistently polled as one of the consensus top three issues for Americans leading up to the Nov. 5 election between Harris, the 59-year-old Democratic nominee for president, and Republican former President Donald Trump.

Harris, her party, and her role as No. 2 in the Biden administration have been criticized for not squaring up on women's issues related to Title IX rules changes. The changes allow men into women’s spaces, such as athletics competitions, prisons, and public bathrooms.

As it relates to health care, critics note that during the COVID-19 era the Biden administration gave general discharges to the majority of troops – women and men – kicked out of the armed forces for refusing vaccination. ##

Some added items, starting with the tweets (X-posts) provide more context.

There are those who think that the abortion issue will keep some people of faith on the sidelines this election, as deposed President Donald J. Trump has taken a more hands-off approach on that topic this election cycle, saying it is now in the hands of the states. Here in Florida, for example, this year there will be a state constitutional amendment on the ballot.

Florida Amendment 4, Right to Abortion Initiative (2024)

It isn't just Coach Dungy, said to be a Baptist, pastors, or just the Catholic Bishops that are sounding the alarm for people of faith. Even some abortion supporters are concerned about aspects of this proposed amendment. Why?

Randy Fine is a member of the Florida House of Representatives. According to left-leaning Wikipedia, Fine was first elected to the Florida House of Representatives in 2016. His district covers southern Brevard County. His education included: Harvard Business School (1996–1998), Harvard College (1992–1996). In a recent briefing to AMAC Action members, Fine said he is Jewish, and that the majority of Jews are okay with abortion. After saying his own beliefs on the issue, Fine said that when you change the constitution of a state, it is much, much harder to undo or modify that, unlike a state law, which can be modified more readily. Fine explained that and others on the call said this proposed amendment is being falsely marketed. When he discusses "Florida Amendment 4, Right to Abortion Initiative" he says even pro-abortion voters in minutes may change their view once they are told some of the facts.

Another presenter, Lynda Bell, shared this from the Do No Harm website.

Bell said this amendment protects the abortion industry, which is very lucrative. Like Rep. Fine, she said it offers no protections for women or their babies. Bell said a similar measure was passed in Kansas and the fears being experssed here in FL are already being witnessed in that state.

There are many issues and candidates on the ballot this year. TARK made several useful and related points in his post yesterday on why people of faith, like Dungy, pastors, priests and other religious leaders must be fully engaged in this upcoming election. As someone who grew up in the tumult of the 1960s and 1970s, I know first hand how far our society has drifted from its Judeo-Christian roots. But the pastor at the church yesterday said the Bible says 365 times words that basically mean, "be not afraid."

As our family was leaving, I noticed a woman with a t-shirt that said: "Fear the Future." I said to her, well, that's the opposite of what we heard in the sermon, but I undersand your point. She laughed.

So long as people of faith act instead of cower in fear, there is nothing that we fear that can't be overcome. If God is for us, who can be against us? (Romans 8:31)
