Passenger Killed After Driver Falls Asleep Behind Wheel On I-4: FHP

The car was headed east on Interstate 4 in Polk County when the driver fell asleep behind the wheel and crashed into a pickup truck.

POLK COUNTY, FL — One person died after following asleep behind the wheel and crashing into a pickup truck on Interstate 4 in Polk County, killing a passenger in the car.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a 41-year-old Orlando man was driving a Lexus east on I-4 at 6:10 a.m. with four passengers in the car when he fell asleep, lost control and struck a Dodge pickup truck, then rotated and struck a concrete embankment.

One passenger was pronounced dead. The driver and two passengers received minor injuries. The 48-year-old driver of the pickup truck from Ruskin was not hurt.
