Update: 4-Vehicle Crash Closes Eastbound Lanes on 54

Update, Sept. 5 3:13 p.m.: The Florida Highway Patrol has identified the other drivers in the crash. They are Johanna E. Cronin, 50, of Land O’ Lakes; Maria A. Gelyon, 37, of Land O’ Lakes; and Ashley M. Campbell, 27, of Dade City. All drivers are listed in serious, but stable condition. Cronin was the driver of the 1995 Honda. Gelyon was the driver of the 2012 Volvo. Campbell was driving the 2013 Toyota.

Update Sept. 5, 2:22 p.m.: The inside and center lanes of eastbound State Road 54 are now re-opened.  The outside lane of State Road 54 remains closed while the cement truck is recovered from the south shoulder of the roadway.

The drivers of the other vehicles are listed in serious, but stable condition at their respective hospitals.  Driver two, a 50-year-old woman from Land O' Lakes was taken to Tampa General.  Driver three, a 37-year-old from Land O' Lakes was taken to St. Joseph’s as was Driver four, a 63-year-old woman from Dade City.

A cement truck with faulty brakes caused a four-vehicle collision with injuries just before noon today on State Road 54 at the Suncoast Parkway.

According to Florida Highway Patrol’s Sgt. Steve Gaskins, eastbound lanes of State Road 54 at the Suncoast Parkway remain closed at this time.

The accident happened when Jose Felix Fonseca-Reina, 39, of Port Richey was exiting the Suncoast in a 1999 Oshkosh cement truck, Gaskins said. The truck’s brakes failed, preventing Fonseca-Reina from stopping at the bottom of the exit ramp. Instead, the unloaded truck ran over a raised concrete median, went across the center lanes of State Road 54 and across a grassy median before running into three other vehicles that were stopped at the light.

“The three vehicles were arranged parallel to each other in all three eastbound lanes, with a 1995 Honda Accord in the inside lane, a 2012 Volvo XC60 SUV in the center lane, and a 2013 Toyota Scion two door in the far outside lane,” Gaskins wrote in an email. “Fonseca-Reina received minor injuries and was treated on-scene. The occupants of the other three vehicles were transported by ground and air units to area hospitals.”

The highway patrol is not releasing the names of the other drivers at this time. The accident remains under investigation.

The truck is owned by A-Plus Masonry & Concrete Pumping in Odessa.
