County Leader Says U.S. Constitution is Under Attack

Pasco County Commissioner Jack Mariano wants to make one thing clear: He supports the United States Constitution and its Bill of Rights as written.

And, he wants his fellow commissioners to make the same pledge.

That’s why Mariano intends to ask the entire Pasco County Commission to approve a resolution in support of the Constitution during the board’s Tuesday, March 19, meeting.

Mariano said the idea for the resolution evolved over the course of the board’s past few meetings as discussion about closing the gun show loophole was addressed. While the county has since put on hold a formal discussion about making it illegal for gun show attendees to purchase weapons without a background check, concern about the “chipping away” of the 2^nd Amendment weighed on Mariano’s mind, he said.

Recently, Mariano suggested the board declare its support for the amendment that gives Americans the right to bear arms. Other commissioners, he said, suggested a declaration in support of the entire Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

Mariano agreed.

“We support the Constitution as written,” he said.

When asked if he felt the Constitution is under attack, he responded: “Absolutely, I do.”

Among other things, “the 2^nd Amendment has been chipped away,” he said.

The Commission meets March 19 at 10 a.m. at the West Pasco Government Center, 8731 Citizens Drive, in New Port Richey. Other items on the agenda include potential new staff members for Animal Services and proposed renovations at the county’s Emergency Operations Center.
