Duke Energy Customers May See Rate Reduction

Lower natural gas prices are prompting the potential rate drop.

Tampa Bay area residents who get their electric service through Duke Energy may soon pay a slightly lower rate.

The electric company has asked the Florida Public Service Commission for permission to lower rates starting in April. The request comes as the cost for natural gas continues to drop.

Should the rate change be approved, the typical 1,000-kWh residential bill would drop by $5.83 to $108.32, Duke Energy reported in a media release.

“After this price drop, our customers will be paying about 21 percent less for electricity than they were in January 2009. That’s nearly $30 in savings every month,” Alex Glenn, Duke Energy state president – Florida, said in a statement.

The Public Service Commission is anticipated to approve the request. If it does, the new prices will go into effect on the April 2016 bill. It is unclear, however, just how soon the PSC will take up the request.
