Pizza Delivery Driver Finds 3-Year-Old Wandering Alone

A Wesley Chapel woman was arrested following the Sunday incident.

A Hungry Howie’s Pizza driver got more than she bargained for when making a Sunday night delivery in the Wesley Chapel area.

Instead of an adult answering the door on Baythorn Drive ready to pay, the driver found a 3-year-old child dressed only in a diaper. The child opened the door, came outside and started wandering around.

Concerned, the driver tried to reach out to a grownup in the house, a probable cause affidavit stated. After having no luck at the door, the driver entered the home and hollered “pizza delivery,” the report stated.

When she got no answer, the woman went further into the home and found a female passed out in bed. The driver couldn’t get the woman to awaken and returned outside with the child to call 911.

When deputies arrived they, too, tried to rouse the woman, but initially had no luck. They did, however, spot narcotics paraphernalia on a kitchen counter, the report said. When deputies became a little more insistent in their attempts to awaken the woman, she did open her eyes, but yelled at them instead of asking about the child, the report said.

Deputies ultimately arrested Hayleigh Normandin on a charge of child neglect. During the arrest, she is accused of pulling away and kicking a deputy, adding a battery on a law enforcement charge to her plate, the report said. She also tried to break her phone, which deputies say was evidence in the case. That resulted in a third charge.

Normandin, 21, was booked into the Pasco County Jail Sunday and remained there Monday in lieu of $15,000 bond. It is unclear if she is the child’s mother.
