Publix Named America's 2nd Favorite Grocery Chain

The Florida-based giant trailed Trader Joe's in a recent market study.

For the second time in recent months, Florida-based Publix has been beaten out by Trader Joe’s in a national consumer survey.

This time Market Force Information, a company that provides customer intelligence to a variety of industries, studied more than 7,200 consumers to draw its conclusions. The study was meant to cast light on grocery shopping habits, including the brands consumers prefer, a media release on the findings stated.

The rankings were based on participant responses to questions about their satisfaction with their most recent grocery shopping experiences and how likely they would be to refer the store in question to others.

Trader Joe’s came in first out of 14 grocery chains included in the study with Publix number two and ALDI coming in third. Trader Joe’s has topped this particular survey three years running.

“In the fiercely competitive grocery industry, customer satisfaction is the one measure that can tell you if you’re delivering on your brand promise or falling short,” Cheryl Flink, chief strategy officer for Market Force, was quoted in the release as saying. “Our research revealed that one in eight shoppers was disappointed with their most recent visit to their primary grocer, leaving ample room for improvement. This is especially impactful when you consider that delighted customers are 2.4 times more likely to recommend their grocer to others.”

Trader Joe’s also took the No. 1 spot in the American Customer Satisfaction Index, which was released earlier this year. Publix had held the No. 1 position since 1995 until this year’s tie for number two honors with Texas-based H-E-B.

Lakeland-based Publix is a powerhouse in the Florida market with locations across the state and more anticipated as a buying spree is under way for potential new sites.
