Update: Detention Deputy Fired After Inmate Was Slapped

The Pasco County detention deputy was charged with battery following the Monday incident involving a handcuffed inmate.

LAND O’ LAKES, FL — A 47-year-old Pasco County detention deputy found herself booked into her own jail following a Monday incident involving a handcuffed inmate.

According to the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office, Cpl. Leann Hindman was charged Tuesday morning with battery by a secure facility employee on a confined person following a tussle with an inmate. That tussle took place on Monday and was caught on the Land O’ Lakes Detention Center’s surveillance camera.

Hindman is seen on the surveillance video cuffing the inmate, who is not being identified, and placing her into a chair. The female inmate is shown complying with Hindman’s comments, but appears to say something to Hindman, who is then shown on the video leaning in and slapping the woman across the face.

“Her report stated that she slapped the inmate in response to the inmate pinching her, yet the video disputes that claim,” the arrest report noted.

Hindman was charged in the battery case Tuesday and was later released in lieu of $250 bond. The sheriff’s office later announced that Hindman had been fired from her post.
