Update: 77-Year-Old Kills Neighbor, Himself

The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office has released details about Monday's SWAT call out in Largo.

Update Oct. 13, 7:02 p.m.: Pinellas County deputies aren’t sure just why Thomas Joseph Malooly, 77, shot his neighbor and then himself Monday morning.

According to deputies, the incident began to unfold around 8 a.m. when police received a call about shots fired and an armed suspect at 2232 Blanchard Court in Largo. When they arrived, deputies found Nicholas Wayne Weedman Lowery, 29, dead outside the home.

As police were setting up a perimeter around the complex, they heard another shot ring out, an email from the department to media stated.

The SWAT team was then called to the scene because Malooly wouldn’t respond to attempts to reach him. After a standoff, SWAT team members found him dead inside the home.

Deputies say he suffered from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Two guns were found inside his home.

Malooly and Lowery were neighbors, but it is unclear what sparked the fatal incident.

Nearby homes and businesses were evacuated Monday morning, but no one else was injured in the confrontation.

Update Oct. 13, 12:36 p.m.: Deputies say two bodies have been found at the 2232 Blanchard Court address. One person was found dead outside the home. The barricaded person was also found dead inside. The incident remains under investigation and names are not being released at this time.

Update Oct. 13, 9:41 a.m.: Residents close to 2232 Blanchard Court in Largo have been evacuated. The sheriff’s office says it received a call about shots fired in the area. The SWAT team is on the scene. No additional details are available at this time about the Monday morning occurrence. It is unclear if anyone is injured or who the ”armed subject” is.

Residents may want to avoid the area of Ulmerton Road and Seminole Boulevard.

The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office said it is β€œactively working the scene with an armed subject,” in an email to media sent Monday at 8:55 a.m.

It is currently unclear just where the armed person is, but police are staging in the area of the northeast corner of Ulmerton and Seminole Boulevard.
