Details Emerge In Shooting Of Intruder

A Clearwater man suffered life-threatening injuries after being shot by the homeowner.

LARGO, FL β€” The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office has released some details in a Sunday afternoon shooting involving a homeowner and an intruder in unincorporated Largo.

According to the agency, Linda, 66, and Wayne Nundy, 69, returned to their home on Whitney Drive around 2 p.m. after running some errands. Once at home, Linda told her husband she saw a man walking into their backyard garage.

At that point, Wayne armed himself with a .40-caliber semi-automatic pistol and went out to investigate. Wayne, an email from the sheriff’s office said, encountered the intruder after climbing the stairs to the second floor of the garage.

Nundy told the intruder to get off his property, but the man failed to do so, the email said. The intruder began to come down the staircase and lunged at Nundy, who fired a warning round into the floor, detectives said.

That shot had little effect, the email said. The intruder kept coming at Nundy, who told the man as many as β€œ50 times” to leave the property.

β€œThe suspect would continually stop, face him and make aggressive movements towards him,” the email said.

The back-and-forth continued until the two exited the garage and began to circle each other on the patio near a shallow pool, the email said. The intruder once again lunged toward Nundy, grabbed a metal patio chair and tried to strike the homeowner. The struggle, the email said, continued until β€œNundy responded by firing a shot that injured the suspect.”

Jacob Desimone, 28, of Clearwater suffered life-threatening injuries, deputies say. He was taken to Bayfront Medical Center for treatment.

The investigation is ongoing and no charges had been filed as of Monday afternoon.
