'In Dog We Trust' Typo Creates Stir at Sheriff's Office

An area rug in the lobby of the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office had quite a misprint.

Make no bones about it, the wording on an area rug at the new $81 million Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office headquarters in Largo was simply a misprint.

That’s according to the agency following Wednesday’s discovery of an interesting typo emblazoned on one of two area rugs displaying the sheriff’s office logo. Imprinted in the sheriff’s star were the words “In Dog We Trust” instead of “In God We Trust.”

It seems the rug with the transposed letters was placed on the floor months ago without anyone noticing the goof. There it sat without its smaller details garnering notice from passersby. That is until Wednesday when a deputy was peering at the deep green rug with its gold star emblem and noticed the typo.

“The rug was removed from the lobby today,” the sheriff’s office noted in an email Wednesday following a frenzy of inquiries about the typo. “While there were two rugs in the lobby, only one of them had the misprint.”

Once alerted to the misprint, the sheriff’s office took no time investigating where the blame might lie. It seems the proof for the $500 rug was submitted correctly, but somehow the manufacturer managed to make the mistake when creating the final product, the sheriff’s office noted.

“We are currently working with the manufacturer, American Floor Mats, to get a replacement rug.”
