Orchids in Our Backyard: Florida's Wild Orchids: A Presentation by Prem Subrahmanyam

LARGO, FL, September 6, 2012 – Award-winning photographer and orchid expert Prem Subrahmanyam will share his highly acclaimed presentation, "Orchids in Our Backyard: Florida's Wild Orchids," at 7PM, on Wednesday, October 3^rd. Free and open to the public, the event is organized by the Pinellas Chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society, and will be held at the Pinellas County Extension, 12520 Ulmerton Rd., in Largo.

Prem has studied Florida's orchids for more than 25 years. “Many people are not aware of the beauty growing within just a few miles of where they live, work, and play in our own ‘Land of Flowers,’ ” he says.  Passionate about sharing his knowledge, Prem not only presents, through his photographs, our native orchids in all their artistic beauty, but also educates the public by providing insight into the bedazzling flowers -- their habitats, blooming times, distribution, and threats to their survival.

Prem’s photographs have appeared in numerous print and online publications, and his website, www.flnativeorchids.com, displays many of his images, accompanied by detailed information about the orchid species presented.

The orchid aficionado makes his living as a software engineer and 3-d computer animator. His most widely seen animations can be found in the series "Florida, the Outdoor Adventure" and "Florida Takes to the Trails", both of which have aired on PBS nationally.

Prem will have available for sale at the event hand-signed and numbered limited edition photographic prints of some of the more spectacular native orchids, as well as t-shirts and greeting cards. The presentation will be followed by a question-answer session. Complimentary refreshments will be served.

The Florida Native Plant Society was organized in 1980 to promote the preservation, conservation, and restoration of the native plants and native plant communities of Florida. With more than 200 members, the Pinellas Chapter is one of the state's largest and most active.
