Southwest Florida market property values in Collier, Lee and Charlotte counties drop in 2025 (wgcu.org) — Marco Island property owners are seeing a 5% drop in market values for 2025, even as the city’s taxable value edges up about 2%. That means local governments still gain some tax base, but far less than in past boom years, and residents could see tighter budgets and careful spending decisions as officials finalize tax rates by October 1.

Marco City Council talks buying beach parking lot, outsourcing police (marconews.com) — Marco Island’s city council is exploring buying the privately owned Turtle Lot beach parking area and even outsourcing police services as it braces for a possible $2 million annual budget hit from a proposed state property tax change. Leaders say the goal is to create new revenue streams, mainly from tourists, to fund infrastructure, water-quality fixes and city operations without raising residents’ taxes.

The roundup also spotlights a 1960s rock tribute show at Arts Bonita and a women artists’ exhibition at Naples Botanical Garden, offering several cultural outings across Southwest Florida.

Longtime curator set to retire after three decades at the Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum on Sanibel (wgcu.org) — Marco Island listeners of WGCU’s WMKO 91.7 FM may be interested in a longtime Sanibel neighbor: the Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum’s science director and curator, Dr. José Leal, is retiring after three decades. In a wide-ranging interview, he reflects on his path into malacology, building a world-class shell collection, and helping the museum recover and improve after Hurricane Ian’s near-total devastation.
