13-Year-Old Dies While Free Diving In FL Keys: Monroe County Sheriff

FLORIDA KEYS — A 13-year-old Marathon boy died Tuesday at Fishermen’s Hospital after a free diving incident in the Florida Keys, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office wrote in a Facebook post.

He was spearfishing with a friend around 3 p.m. in about 25 feet of water eight miles south of Duck Key when the incident took place, the sheriff’s office said.

A nearby boater brought the boy ashore to Marathon and from there he was taken to the hospital.

Foul play is not believed to be a factor in the incident, which is under investigation, MCSO said.

Details of what happened to the teen weren’t shared by the agency. Autopsy reports are pending.

“This is a heartbreaking and tragic case,” said Sheriff Rick Ramsay. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this difficult time.”
