Bobby Geroulanos, Miami, Why You Should Go on a Backpacking Trip

Haralambos Bobby Geroulanos offers advice on why you should go on a backpacking trip and the many benefits you can gain from the experience.

Many millennials are developing a passion for spending time outdoors. Whether it’s hiking, kayaking, or something else, more and more people realize the great benefits of spending time outside. If you’re looking for a new hobby or something exciting to try, consider embarking on a backpacking trip. Even if you’re a rookie, there are plenty of options out there for you; simply take a weekend trip! You do not have to hike the entire Appalachian Trail. Get the basics you’ll need for a day or two and then head to a beautiful park.

Affordable

While all the proper backpacking supplies for a longer trip can get pricey, if you’re only planning on going for a long weekend, backpacking is relatively affordable. You’ll need to get some staple items, but those usually last for a long period of time and can be used again and again if you discover backpack trips are your passion.

Great exercise

Backpacking, whether you’re doing it casually or are more intense about it, is great exercise. You’re carrying decent weight for miles at a time. Walking is good exercise and not too stressful on your body. Even if you aren’t in great shape, light hiking and short backpacking trips are certainly doable and can help you become more fit.

Appreciate nature

When you’re taking a backpacking trip in a national forest, you have the opportunity to truly appreciate nature in a way many of us do not. We’re far too busy running from place to place and trying to squeeze as much into each day as possible; take a walk in nature and truly absorb the beauty around you.

Group event

You can certainly go on a backpacking trip alone, but it’s also a great group activity. Going backpacking with your closest friends or a significant other is a fantastic way to grow closer and develop a stronger bond. Have new, unforgettable experiences together.

Technology break

You should probably take your phone with you in case of an emergency, but spending long amounts walking and taking in nature allows you the necessary time away from a screen. If you spend a lot of time looking at your phone or computer, backpacking can be a great solution to all of that screen time.

Visit cool places

You don’t have to hike through the forest to take a backpacking trip! Some people also backpack across countries and stop at cities along the way. Many millennials backpack across Europe, spending time in cheap hostels created specifically to help out backpackers.
