Cuban Hero to be Honored in Miami Beach
José Martí was the 'Apostle of Cuban Independence.'
MIAMI BEACH -- Popular former Congressman Lincoln Diaz-Balart will be on hand Friday morning to help Miami Beach officials celebrate the life of Cuban national hero José Martí.
"Miami Beach is home to many Cuban-Americans, and I invite the entire community to come out and celebrate his legacy over cafecitos,” said Miami Beach Commissioner Kristen Rosen Gonzalez.
Through his writings and political activity, Martí became a symbol for Cuba's bid for independence against Spain in the 19th century, and is referred to as the "Apostle of Cuban Independence.”
