Here are the top stories today in Miami:

1. A man is facing nearly two dozen charges after police said he impersonated Broward County deputies in order to scam multiple people out of nearly $50,000. The accused man is being held in Pennsylvania on similar charges. The charges include organized scheme to defraud, grand theft, impersonating a law enforcement officer, extortion and criminal use of personal identification information. (Miami Patch)

2. Chick-fil-A in Kendall is making headlines for experimenting with a shorter work week in exchange for longer workdays. Employees only work three days a week but work 13 to 14 hours a day instead of a usual shift. The schedule change brought the franchise hundreds of applicants seeking flexible schedules. (WSVN)

3. State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle has announced the arrest of eight elevator mechanics who allegedly paid hundreds to have someone else take their required Florida certification exams, in violation of state law. Two other people are also being charged in the investigation. (WPLG Local 10)

4. The number of registered Republicans voting in Miami-Dade County passed registered Democrats on Wednesday, in a sign of momentum ahead of the Nov. 8 general election. Miami-Dade is historically a Democratic stronghold, which could spell trouble for the Democrats seeking to take power this election cycle. (NBC Miami)

5. City of Miami has advanced an ordinance to increase the residential density in the Wynwood Norte area. The population in the area has faced significant decline in the last few decades. The city believes a lack of quality housing options is to blame. (Miami Today)

  • A South Florida dog groomer is accused of abusing multiple dogs in his care. The owner of American Dog Pet Grooming has been charged with two counts of animal cruelty and pleaded not guilty. (WPLG Local 10)
  • A South Florida woman is warning others of scammers posing as utility workers. The Pembroke Pines resident shared footage of the alleged scammers with NBC 6. She claims that when she asked the people for proof of identification that they would not provide a badge. (NBC Miami)
