The Federal Communications Commission on Wednesday said 18.1 percent of cell sites in Florida were without service.

MIAMI, FL — Cellphone service is gradually returning to Florida four days after Hurricane Irma swept across the length of the state, downing trees and power lines as it did so, according to the latest figures from the federal government.

The Federal Communications Commission on Wednesday released a breakdown of cellphone outages by county in a status report on communications services.

Overall, the FCC said 18.1 percent of cell sites in Florida were out of service Wednesday, down from 24.6 percent Tuesday. That number was 5.3 percent in Georgia (down from 10.5 percent) and less than 1 percent in Alabama.
