Man Arrested After Joking About Bomb While Boarding Cuba Flight At FL Airport

MIAMI, FL — A Louisiana man was arrested Monday after authorities said he told an American Airlines gate agent at Miami International Airport that he had a bomb in his luggage while preparing to board a flight to Cuba, multiple reports said.

Yoel Guevara-Crespo, 33, of Lake Charles, Louisiana, was answering routine security questions before boarding American Airlines Flight 1319 to Camagüey, Cuba, NBC 6 South Florida reported.

When an agent asked whether he had lithium batteries or incendiary devices in his bag, Guevara-Crespo allegedly responded, “No, but I have a bomb,” according to Local 10.

The agent told Guevara-Crespo he couldn’t board the plane and contacted a supervisor.

Though he said he was joking, Guevara-Crespo was taken into custody and his luggage was searched by a bomb-detection K-9, WSVN said. No explosive device was found.

Guevara-Crespo was charged with one count of making a false report about placing a bomb or explosive, a second-degree felony, and booked into the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, reports said.

The arrest came one day after another man was arrested at Miami International Airport after allegedly telling an American Airlines employee he had a grenade in his luggage, Local 10 reported.

That man, 52-year-old Osniel Blanco-Lopez, also claimed he was joking.
