Hurricane Irma: Postal Service Resumes Some SOFL Deliveries

MIAMI, FL — The U.S. Postal Service announced on Wednesday that it has resumed service to a number of South Florida locations. Officials suspended all services to South Florida from Fort Pierce to Key West ahead of Hurricane Irma's anticipated arrival last weekend. Officials said that the first post-storm deliveries began on Tuesday but that retail locations remain closed.

All U.S. Postal Service retail locations were also shut down ahead of Irma. The decision to suspend mail service by the U.S. Postal Service did not affect deliveries by UPS or Federal Express. U.S. mail for South Florida customers was being held at four processing and distribution centers, including three around the Miami area and one in West Palm Beach. The Postal Service has about 9,000 employees in South Florida.

Postal employees should call the USPS National Employee Emergency Hotline for updated information on work schedules and facility status. Employees who have evacuated or relocated due to the hurricane are asked to provide this information by selecting option #5 on the hotline.

"We thank our employees for returning to work to process and deliver the mail when it has been deemed safe to do so," officials said. "We appreciate our customers’ patience as we move forward to restore retail and delivery operations in Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach, Martin, Okeechobee, Hendry, Glades and St. Lucie counties … We also will restore mail delivery and retail operations in Monroe County (Florida Keys) when it is safe to do so."
