Meet The Richest Person In Florida 2019

PALM BEACH, FL — Forbes analyzed the fortunes of the country's richest people to identify each state's wealthiest person. This is the magazine's fifth edition of the list.

The richest resident in Florida is Thomas Peterffy. Peterffy, who lives in Palm Beach, is worth $18.8 billion, according to Forbes. In March's list of the country's billionaires, Peterffy ranked No. 63 — but at that point Forbes had his worth at $17.1 billion.

Peterffy is described by the magazine as a digital trading pioneer and the CEO of Interactive Brokers, which bills its specialized trading platform to investors. He founded the company in 1993.

The child of Hungarian aristocrats who lost everything to the Soviets, Peterffy emigrated to the United States in 1965 at age 21, Forbes says. Along with his trading company Peterffy owns an estimated half-million acres of timberland, mostly in Florida.

The net worth of the individuals on the new wealthiest person list varies. For example, Washington state is home to the world's two richest and most recognizable billionaires; Jeff Bezos and Bill Gates, but in certain states, the richest people only had a nine-figure net worth, Forbes writes.

Collectively, the wealthy on the Forbes list had a net worth of $875 billion, which the magazine says set a new record.

9. Phil Knight & family: $35 billion (Oregon)
10. Jacqueline Mars: $28.1 billion (Virginia) tied with John Mars: $28.1 billion (Wyoming)
