Miami Takes Aim At Pesky Red-Light Cameras

City officials voted unanimously to ban red-light cameras.

MIAMI, FL — In a perfect world there would be no red lights, only green. But of course that's out of the question for a major city like Miami. So the Magic City's elected officials did the next best thing; they are getting rid of pesky red-light cameras.

"These red-light cameras are essentially another tax, one that the residents of my district cannot afford," insisted Miami Commissioner Manolo Reyes, who co-sponsored a resolution directing the city manager to terminate a contract with a red-light camera provider on Thursday. "I thank my colleagues and Mayor Francis Suarez for their support."

Suarez, Commission Vice Chair Ken Russell and Commissioner Wifredo "Willy Gort also co-sponsored the measure, which passed unanimously.

Officials also voted to give the city manager and administration the resources to address any budgetary shortfalls as a result of the decision.
