SOUTHWEST FLORIDA — Nearly $400,000 has been raised for a student from southwest Florida who was wounded in Monday night’s mass shooting at Michigan State University in East Lansing that left three dead and five injured.

Guadalupe Huapilla-Perez is a junior and hospitality business major at MSU, where she’s a student in the Michigan State University College Assistance Migrant Program, her older sister, Selena Huapilla-Perez, wrote on a GoFundMe fundraiser.

“Lupe was one of the victims injured in the recent attack at Michigan State University,” her sister wrote. “While we are happy that Lupe remains with us, we are devastated by the violence that has impacted so many. This unfortunately includes our family.”

According to Guadalupe’s LinkedIn profile, she graduated from Immokalee High School in Collier County. She began attending MSU in August 2020 and was on track to graduate in May 2024. She was part of the Native American and Hispanic Business Students, the Hotel and Lodging Club, the National Society of Minorities in Hospitality, and Día de la Mujer Conference Planning Committee on campus.

Selena described her sister as “incredibly hard-working, focused and ambitious.”

The student chose “a career path that’s never been explored in our family,” her sister added. “It allows her to travel, learn and challenge herself.”

The siblings hail from a migrant family in South Florida.

Guadalupe is “always one to stand up for our community and speak out for those marginalized voices like our own,” Selena wrote.

When the family learned she had been injured in the shooting, they immediately traveled to Michigan to be by her side.

Money raised will be used to pay for Guadalupe’s medical bills, the family’s travel costs and the family’s monthly bills, as they’re unable to work while they’re in Michigan during her recovery.

“Doctors tell us that even in improving conditions, the process for a full recovery will take months of care and subsequent rehabilitation,” Selena wrote. “Our family is incredibly moved by the love and support others are pouring into us.”
