📰 News we're reading

1. Families displaced after fire at Miami apartment building (nbcmiami.com) — Families living in an 18-unit building on West Flagler Street in Miami were forced out after a fast-moving fire tore through crawl spaces, walls, and the attic Wednesday afternoon. City of Miami firefighters contained the blaze in about an hour, and the American Red Cross is helping more than 20 residents and their pets with temporary housing while officials investigate the cause and assess structural safety.

2. Mother, son accused of embezzling $620,000 from Miami-Dade business to fund lavish lifestyle, police say (cbsnews.com) — Police in Medley say a mother and son stole about $620,000 from Iron Container, a Miami-Dade business, over five years and spent it on luxury items including yachts, vehicles, and a Brickell condo. Both were arrested Wednesday, and a company employee told CBS News Miami that the mother, formerly company president, is no longer employed there as the case heads to court.

3. Four from South Florida among 7 killed in Kenya helicopter crash during safari trip (cbsnews.com) — Miami is mourning after four South Florida residents, including a Miami journalist and a well-known restaurateur tied to Versailles' founding family, were killed in a helicopter crash during a Kenyan safari. The charter flight went down in a remote area, and U.S. officials, CBS News Miami, and local leaders are working with Kenyan authorities as the investigation continues.

4. This Florida pool has caves and waterfalls carved from actual coral rock (wheninyourstate.com) — Just minutes from Miami, Coral Gables' Venetian Pool offers caves, waterfalls, and coral rock grottos fed by a natural aquifer, all in a restored 1920s Mediterranean-style setting. After a major renovation wrapped in late 2025, the National Register-listed pool is again welcoming swimmers who want a historic, resort-like escape without leaving the Miami area.
