PLANTATION, FL — A 19-year-old South Florida man has been charged with extortion and cyberstalking after threatening to leak nude images of state Sen. Lauren Book.

Jeremy Kamperveen of Plantation faked sexually explicit photos of the senator, a Democrat who represents parts of Broward County, according to the Miami Herald. She has also served as Florida’s minority leader since April.

Book told the Florida Department of Law Enforcement on Nov. 12 that she received text messages from an unknown number with two photographs of herself “with exposed breasts” and threatening to leak them to Fox News, according to reports.

“Three weeks ago, I became the victim of ongoing sexual harassment and extortion,” the senator said in a statement, according to CBS Miami. “I immediately notified law enforcement and began working closely with them to track those responsible for sending threatening and disturbing images and messages to my phone, including distorted, fake and stolen images created in an effort to intimidate, threaten, and extort me.”

An undercover agent communicated with the person texting Book, who was later identified to be Kamperveen, and negotiated to pay $4,000 in cash in exchange for the images to be deleted.

Kamperveen was arrested Nov. 17 at a Starbucks in Sunrise, where he thought he was meeting to pick up his cash. He confessed to sending the messages and photos to Book, reports said.
