Orchestra Miami’s Saturdays at Trinity Chamber Music Series concludes this month with Neue Musik: Art Nouveau Music in Germany & Austria. Performed in the historic sanctuary of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in Downtown Miami, this concert features the outstanding musicians of Orchestra Miami performing music by Alban Berg, Carl Frühling, Alma Mahler, and Gustav Mahler.
This concert, performed on Saturday, July 11th at 7 PM, focuses on the “New Music” of Germany and Austria. Often perceived as "radical" or "avant garde", the music of the early 1900’s searches for new sounds and new forms of compositions, while still maintaining influences of lush romanticism from the earlier eras.
The program includes the rarely heard Piano Quartet in A Minor by Gustav Mahler. Composed when Mahler was a student, this is the only surviving example of Mahler’s chamber music compositions. Another rarity will be the Clarinet Trio in A Minor, Op. 40 by Carl Frühling. The trio is one of Frühling’s few surviving works- it is thought that much of his legacy was almost completely erased by the Nazi regime as Frühling was a Jew. With its lush writing for piano, the Trio has influences of Brahms and Wagner yet also has elements of traditional Austrian folk dance and religious chant. It is a beautiful work that deserves to be heard frequently.
The art of the German Lied is represented by three very different composers. Pianist and composer Alma Mahler was eclipsed by her more famous husband, Gustav (who discouraged her compositional efforts). A student of Alexander Zemlinskky, the Fünf Lieder are harmonically complex, creating gorgeous sonic colors and breaking boundaries with her compositional choices. Gustav Mahler is very well-known for his large-scale symphonic works. In this performance, we will hear two of his more intimate works, Wer hat dies Liedlein gedacht and Rheinlegendchen from the Wunderhorn songs. Alban Berg, a student of Arnold Schönberg, is known for his 12-tone compositions, most notably his operas Lulu and Wozzeck. His early songs still have resonances of romanticism. On this program, we will hear threw of his Sieben Früelieder, Nacht, Die Nachtigall and Im Zimmer.
The performers include some of Orchestra Miami’s finest musicians- Mei Mei Luo, violin; Gregory Falkenstein, viola; Christopher Glansdorp, Cello; Ashley Garritson, cello and Richard Hancock, clarinet. Joining them will be Mezzo-SopranoErika Vasallo and Soprano Dalila Lugo alongside Orchestra Miami’s Artistic Director Elaine Rinaldi at the piano.
