Two Miami Area Jewish Community Centers Evacuated After Bomb Threats

Hundreds of people were evacuated after threats to JCCs in Kendall and Miami Beach, as JCCs around the country received similar calls.

MIAMI, FL — Two Miami-Dade County Jewish Community Centers were evacuated Monday after receiving bomb threats. Similar threats prompted evacuations at JCCs in Nashville, Jacksonville, Rockville, Md., New Castle County, Del. and Columbia S.C..

Around 11 a.m., some 300 children were evacuated from the Dave & Mary Alper Jewish Community Center on SW 112th Avenue in Kendall after a phone threat, according to Miami-Dade police. The children were taken to a tennis court after the call, which came in from a local number.

Staff answered the phone shortly before 4 p.m. and told Patch that the facility was planning to release a statement later in the day.

The Miami Beach Jewish Community Center also received a bomb threat by phone on Monday morning. "A handful of people" were evacuated from that JCC, according to Miami Beach police, who said the facility reopened shortly before 1 p.m.

Around the same time as the south Florida threats, similar calls were made to JCCs in Nashville, Jacksonville, Columbia S.C., Rockville, Md., and New Castle County, Del.

There were no known links between the threats as of early Monday afternoon.
