NEW PORT RICHEY, FL — For the third time this month, a person has been killed while riding in a wheelchair on a Tampa Bay road.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, on Thursday at 4:36 p.m., a 79-year-old New Port Richey man was heading north on the shoulder of Rowan Road south of County Road 587 when he began to cross the road.

He wasn't in a designated crosswalk or at a crossing signal at the time he attempted to cross the road.
