Are You Willing to Walk On the Moon?

Are You Willing to Walk On the Moon?

Have you ever made such a bold or far-fetched statement that people thought you are a crazy dreamer even unrealistic? I have, and sometimes my dreams have worked out really well. Other times, um, not so much. The idea of walking on the Moon was the just kind of bold far-fetched statement. Kennedy declared we would put a man on the moon before the end of the decade. This bold and crazy notion scared many people of the day. The United States were at serious ends of the political and global spectrum with Russia. Kennedy wanted to prove to the world, the genius and power of the United States. His bold statement could have a total bust or a defining moment in both United States and human history.  In 1962, that was the concern looming in the mind of the young, brash president Kennedy. After weeks of secret meetings, while weighing the decision to tell the world what was on his mind, JFK finally declared his bold statement to a special joint session of Congress and the world.

Over the years, I have talked with people that remember that time in American history. I was told that the consensus was Kennedy was crazy, a free spirit, too young to be president, and that his comments would embarrass the United States the world.  We have to remember that the computers during the time probably had less processing power than a modern laptop history would show that JFK was a true visionary, a dreamer, yes he was, and thank God for it.

Another bold statement was by President Thomas Jefferson. Jefferson too, was a dreamer, a man that believed anything to be possible. He told Louis and Clark, “You are going on a little trip to the sea”. Well, I am sure it was not that flippant, but you get the idea. The point is JFK and Jefferson along, with many men and women in history have had the courage to make their own bold statement. They made the decision to believe in the dream and found a way to inspire others to believe in it too. The problem today, is this; too many people live in fear, fear of failure, fear of criticism, maybe even fear of actually becoming successful. Today, it seems as if we all want a guarantee of the outcome. We see it all around us, “guaranteed for 90 days”, “money back guarantee”, “guaranteed freshness” and, “guaranteed to make clothes whiter.”  If we do not get a guarantee with a favorable outcome people stay away from the product, problem or worse their own dreams.

I am afraid we have become the generation of “I cannot”. Today people are too afraid to even try. Who makes a bold statement anymore? Centuries ago people conquered new lands, the frontier of space, and the depths of the sea.  Today, people are so quick to judge, criticize all form behind a keyboard, and judge each other that it is no wonder no one never wants to step up, and make a bold statement.  Here’s little secret. Everyone that has made a bold statement and tried even they failed succeed all has people that said it could not be done. The thing you need to find your courage to make your bold statement.  If you know you will have a hard time living with the questions of “What if”, and “If had I just stopped listening to other and listened to myself”. John F. Kennedy and Jefferson had less in resources then we do today yet still declare [it] to be so. If you have the dream; live the dream, spread the dream. If you were to declare a bold statement today, without fear of failure, or criticism what would your bold statement be? Here is little exercise for you.

Write it down. My Bold Statement

1. Write down all the dreams you have or have had. Write down all the reasons you did not go after the dream. Even if you tried but it did not work out, write it down. Take some time to really think and focus on this.

2. Now, you have the entire list, of reasons, excuses, people to blame etc. Even the fears that where so strong that you stopped dead in your tracks.  As you read your list, are the reasons, excuses and people really what stopped you? Be honest!

3. Now, take the negative thoughts, fears, and any other past distraction and write the exact opposite reaction next to each excuse, reason and person that was so negatively impactful that you actually allowed your mind and body to stop. Are those same fears, excuses and people still a problem today. My guess is no. You are now able to look back and see the situation from a new perspective. Stop living in the past with the same story. Make a new story!

Every great invention, discovery, modern convenience all started with a dream, idea and purpose. If excuses were important in our life, human beings would have never walked on the moon, discovered the depths of the sea; developed modern medicine. The light bulb, airplanes, cars, motion pictures, this lap top I am writing this blog with, the internet we are sharing our thoughts and ideas with to the 4D ultrasounds to see inside the womb of life to see the face of an unborn child. All of these examples required a bold statement. Like Kennedy and Jefferson, Edison was mocked; Steve Jobs was considered to be a dreamer hippie. You may even get the critics and naysayers as well. We need to find courage to dig deep inside or souls to know that life has a purpose and your life is waiting to experience the purpose planned for you. Fear is important. We need fear to appreciate and love success. I believe anyone can start a life changing journey, if you are willing to make a Bold Statement. It all starts in our own minds.

We have to make the decision to either be great or hide in the shadows. The words we say the thoughts we think all control our actions. It is these words and thoughts that control our life. The next time you find yourself in a scary place. A place that makes you question “What” you are doing or “How” you are going to do it. Remember the “Why”. The why is the real center of the purpose and your inner-drive; find your why and rest will follow. If you find yourself feeling fearful, and questioning your decision remember Kennedy, and the fact the Neil Armstrong did walk on the Moon on July 20, 1969, when Apollo 11, made contact with the Moon's surface. Remember the fear and determination to succeed that Louis and Clark must have experienced as they faced hostel Indians, sub-zero winter nights in the mountains and limited supplies. Today, you have air conditioning, indoor plumbing, cell phones, high speed internet, Google maps, and so much more. Make your bold statement and start living the life you are intended to live.  Let me know what your Bold Statement is and leave a comment below.
