Binge-Eating, Cart-Driving Walmart Customer Busted: Deputies

The woman is accused of riding around a store, helping herself to food and drink.

LECANTO, FL – A 25-year-old Lecanto woman faces criminal charges after Citrus County deputies say she went on a binge-eating spree inside a local Walmart.

According to the sheriff’s office, the woman caught a Walmart loss prevention officer’s attention by acting suspicious inside the store while driving a motorized cart on Dec. 22. As the security officer watched the shopper, he noticed a half-empty wine bottle inside her cart. That was more than enough to keep his attention focused on the woman.

Before his eyes, the woman picked out a sushi package, opened it and swiped a bite before putting it back on the shelf, a probable cause affidavit stated. The woman is then accused of doing the same thing with a pack of mini muffins, some cinnamon rolls and “the majority of a rotisserie chicken,” the report said.

Before she was waylaid by security, the woman had racked up $32.36 in partially consumed food and wine all while driving that motorized shopping cart, the report noted. Store security detained the woman and called on deputies for assistance.

Josseleen Elinda Lopez was brought into custody on petty theft charges. When deputies searched her possessions, they found three empty syringes. Post arrest, the woman told deputies she had used the needles to “shoot up meth,” the report said. That admission and the needles earned her an extra charge of possession of drug paraphernalia.

As for the food and wine, Lopez told deputies she was hungry. While she knew the act was wrong, she “did it anyway,” the report noted.

Lopez’s bond was set at $1,500, jail records indicate.
