GEEKNOTE: Sunday Afternoons

GEEKNOTE:  There is just something special about Sunday afternoons for me.  Generally speaking, writing this GEEKNOTE is the only thing on my agenda.  That and maybe a nap while watching the Bucs play football.  Watching stock cars make all those left turns is also good for setting the stage for an epic nap.  It is a time to sit back, relax, listen to some of my old LP's, and think about how the past week went and gather my thoughts before the start of the new week.

The Book of Genesis has a pair of creation narratives that talk about God spending six days working on creation and then kicking back on the seventh day with a cold one and relaxing while he checked out what he had accomplished.  Maybe that's not EXACTLY how it is written and some of us don't buy the literal 7 day bit, but the general drift and the clear implication of the stories is that each of us needs to kick back and recharge a bit each week.   Different religions designate different days for this purpose, but be it Friday, Saturday, or Sunday, the idea is the same... lay off the regular work schedule, relax, and take some time to thank your creator for the things you enjoy in life.

Each of us approaches this differently.  For some, the sound of an organ playing old time hymns brings us peace.  For others it is praise songs accompanied by screaming electric guitars and drums or perhaps a rollicking black gospel music service, or the quiet solitude of Gregorian chants.  Some folks forego the whole church thing and simply take a quiet walk.  Work will wait.  With the exception of the Gregorian Chants, I've experienced all of these right here in New Port Richey.  (I have a Chants CD, so I've got that covered too.)

This next week, we get the opportunity to enjoy a three day weekend celebrating Labor Day.  I encourage you to take one of those three days and do as absolutely little work as possible.   Take the time to reintroduce yourself to your family, go to church, visit a park, watch a football game, scorch some burgers and brats on the grill.  Anything but work.  Enjoy!

If you can unplug for a bit, I think you'll find that the following week goes better.  Let me know how it goes.

As always, feel free to drop me a note or give me a call (847-2424) if you have any questions about your computer or the Internet.
