'God Bless America' Sparks Controversy at Florida School
A high school student has been told he can't end morning announcements with the phrase.

A Yulee High School studentβs decision to go off script with morning announcements by adding the phrase βGod Bless Americaβ at the end has sparked threat of legal action and protests.
The student, who has not been identified, began using the phrase at the end of announcements when the school year began, First Coast News reported.
The off-script addition seemingly went unnoticed until two students, who are atheists, lodged a complaint with the American Humanist Association. The group, whose slogan is βGood Without A God,β had its legal center send a letter to the Nassau County School District demanding the practice be stopped.

βThe letter asserts that this endorsement of religion by a public school violates the Establishment Clause, as it privileges religion over nonreligion,β according to the associationβs website. βSuch government promotion of theism also defines God-belief as patriotic and relegates atheist, humanist and other nontheist students to second-class citizenship.β

School district officials responded to the six-page letter by writing a letter of their own, saying the phrase was added in, unscripted, and that it would cease to allow it to be used in announcements, the association reported.
While the student was not disciplined for uttering the words, the districtβs decision to ban the phrase from morning announcements has drawn fire from parents and students who support the inclusion.
Parents have been protesting outside the school while some students are expressing disdain for the decision, Action News Jax reported.
βIβve never seen the whole student body so upset over a comment,β said Bailey Wall, executive president of Yulee High School student government association, told the station.
βThe president says God Bless America,β parent Amy Richmond told First Coast News. βWhat is the big deal saying it in our school? I am so proud of him.β
