Water heaters are the second largest user of power in the home. Heating and cooling is first.
For the majority of homes the standard 40 gal electric water heater is used. this consumes 4500 watts of power
and is actually a very good choice for the majority of the population. This W/H is super insulated , just put your hand on the side and you can feel the fact that the exterior is not hot ,even though the water is hot inside. The average Home spends over $2.75 a day on power to heat there water . I average 6 to 10 cents a day. And here is how I do it. I have mounted a 30 amp simple toggle switch to it. I have tried many ways and believe I have perfected a good method to save.. Five - Ten minutes before I take a shower I turn it on ,when I get out I then turn it off. Now there will be excess hot water left in tank so this is the time to do the dishes, and the tank is so super insulated you will still have hot water in the tank for the next day or next shower for other family members. The water heater heats quickly if it is a fairly new model.. next blog I will address why this method is more efficient than the instant on heaters they sell. A simple method to see how much you spend on water heating is use your camera phone and take a picture of your power meter now turn off all power in house except water heater turn on water heater for thirty minutes , then off now take a shower you should have plenty . After thirty minutes take a second picture of meter use this increase to calculate power used.. (watch this blog to show you how to read your power meter) All for now enjoy the great weather this week and SAVE POWER
