Pasco County Investigates Cause Of 20 Depressions In Hudson

Pasco County Emergency Management officials have now identified 20 depressions in the Lakeside Woodlands community.

HUDSON, FL -- Pasco County Emergency Management officials have now identified 20 depressions in the Lakeside Woodlands community between Sylvan Drive and Willow Brook Court.

After examining the holes that have opened up in the ground on Tuesday, director of emergency management Andrew Fossa said the depressions have grown slightly but no structures are in danger and there are no threats to public safety.

The depressions began to appear a week ago. The largest hole is 15 feet long, 25 feet wide and 8 feet deep. It has water in it, indicating that it reaches into the aquifer, said Fossa.

A state geologist met with emergency management staff at the site and has begun collecting information to determine what caused the depressions. Fossa said it is rare for so many depressions to open at the same time in the same location. He noted that there is an underground cave system in the area.
