Police: 15 Baseless Campus Shooting Threats Likely Twitter Hoax
University of Florida classes remained open Wednesday, despite the threats.
The University of Florida Police Department issued an alert to the campus around 6 a.m. Wednesday morning, warning students of threats sent to the campus via Twitter.
The University Athletic Association (UAA) told university police that 15 separate messages had been sent to the campus from different accounts registered throughout the United States. The messages arrived around the same time and all said, “I’m gonna shoot up the college tomorrow.”
University police ask students to remain vigilant throughout the day, but do not put much stock in the threats. A similar threat was sent to another university through social media and ultimately turned out to be a hoax, university police said in the alert.
