SAVE ON POWER : BY MARK ABBOTT

Heating your Home with electric:

That is how majority of homes in Pasco are heated.
First the most efficient way is by heat pump, this simply means turning a valve in your AIR CONDITIONER the other direction so the heat goes into your house. This is very efficient and I will write a very detailed article on how to pick the correct heat pump to save energy just as soon as it gets cold.
This December its been so mild it is easy to use a space heater and save power
there are many types out there so lets discuss a few.
A) The standard strip heat , just some metal strips that glow red
works but uses lots of power.    switch on front most models
1250 watts or high setting 1500 watts
B) Strip heater with a fan  .   this has same efficiency as above unit except it blows heat around room  (same as a hair dryer)
C) Reflective heater (VERY EFFICIENT) This usually has two tall quartz clear vertical rods that glow red. They use aprox 40% less energy and the way to use them is to aim them directly at your body. The radiant heat will be absorbed into
our body (similar to heat lamps on a food serving line). There best used when sitting in your easy chair and aiming at you.  usually two switch settings
  400 watts and 800 watts

So what I use is C when in living room and B but a very small one only 550 watts. This one was for a boat and I use it in my master bedroom all winter long as it heats the entire room just fine.
So to sum it up most homes that use electric have strip heat in there air conditioner units and burn 8000 to 10000 watts  in a small home. To save energy I only use this large amount of heat if having friends over , most of the time spot heating is all that is needed especially when sleeping. 550 watts versus 10,000 watts        HUGE power savings.
Next blog why are heat pumps so efficient, stay tuned and we will patch up your power bill
