September 11th Memorial

A time to mourn, reflect, and learn.

The September 11th Memorial in Sims Park does not change much from year to year. There are always local clergy that pray, patriotic music and artwork from local schools, and a guest speaker that was present at one of the horrific locations. It always takes place on September 11th in Sims Park. Music starts at 6:30 pm, the memorial service starts at 7:00 pm, and it is all over by 8:30 pm.

This Memorial has become a tradition in our City. It is a time where people can grieve and reflect on the day that we will never forget. But that is not its sole purpose. It has also become a time to teach our children. Many of our youth were not around 13 years ago as we all held our breath when we watched the plane hit the Twin Towers. They did not see all the ordinary people become extraordinary heroes as they came together to help their fellow man and country. It is our responsibility as a community to teach them. To show them that sometimes in our darkest moments, the greatest light can be found.

I urge all of you to attend the September 11th Memorial in New Port Richey, and to bring your children or grandchildren with you. There will be no fireworks, although I did hear that You’re a Grand Old Flag will be playing. As a community we will come together to mourn, to reflect, and to learn from a day that changed the world forever.
