New Technology in Rust treatment
Encore Launches 2 Rust-Treatments for Fresh and Salt water. ECO FRIENDLY!!!

August 5, 2010 For Release.
Encore has announced that it has released two innovative water-based rust-treating and rust-inhibiting products that are suitable for use in inland or saltwater environments.
“KnockOut, a one-step rust-converter and acrylic primer, can be sprayed, brushed, or rolled directly over a rusted surface”, says Jeff Moreau, President of Encore Coatings. “The conversion of the rust takes place within minutes and can typically be painted with a top coat within 20 minutes of application”, says Moreau. What makes KnockOut unique among rust converters is its ability to remain on vertical and overhead surfaces without sagging or dripping, which allows the conversion to take place and leave a smooth, paintable surface. KnockOut accepts water and oil based paints and coatings.

Moreau has also announced the availability of RustOx, a direct-to-metal, direct-to-rust water-based coating that suffocates rust and prevents rust bleed-through. “Perhaps the chief benefit to the client is the fact that both of these products are extremely safe, very low in VOCs”, said Moreau. “Many products that are used to achieve the same results are harmful and subject to stringent new regulations regarding VOC content. The fact that it’s not necessary to sandblast the surface is reason enough to embrace this new system.
Rusted mild steel samples were primed with KnockOut, then coated with RustOx and subjected to long-term salt-fog and submerged saltwater tests developed by ASTM and the Petroleum Institute. Where many coatings only require 72-96 hours of testing before rust grading is possible, the specimens were showing zero signs of effects from the salt. Rust grading was possible after 720 hours of exposure, with a rust grade of 8.5 (excellent) above the water-line and a 10 (exemplary) below the water-line.

KnockOut dries clear. RustOx can be tinted to any color by adding one quart of paint to the RustOx kit.
Both products can be brushed, sprayed, or rolled. Both products dry within 20 minutes and can be top coated immediately thereafter. Where current state-of-the-art requires 24 hours between coats, this is game-changing technology that represents a tremendous time saving for the applicator and client.
These products can be applied over aluminum and steel, and may reduce the effects of electrolysis on ferrous substrates.
“We are not kidding ourselves about the challenges that lie ahead. Coal tar epoxy, our chief target, is well-entrenched. It’s the “go-to” specification for the engineer. However, when the engineers begin to see what these two Encore products save the client, and what it does (or doesn’t do) to the environment, we’ll start seeing the change. When the environmental agencies permitting the work see the product, it will change. I was involved in the movement to replace CCA-treated wood in the marine environment with vinyl and composite alternatives. I have no doubt that change will come to the marine coatings market as well.”
The KnockOut and RustOx products are excellent for all marine applications such as barges, pilings, sheet pilings, bridge infrastructure, water towers, pipelines, and other industrial applications. Safe, organic additives can be added to prevent barnacles and other growth on barges and steel hulled vessels.
