📰 News we're reading

1. WELLEN PARK: Hose 'uncoupled,' North Port Fire Station 87 now operating (yoursun.com) — North Port Fire Rescue’s new Station 87 is now open in Wellen Park, giving nearby neighborhoods faster emergency response and added peace of mind. City and Wellen Park leaders say the developer-funded station won’t burden taxpayers and was built to keep pace with rapid growth, featuring modern gear, living quarters, and systems designed to cut response times.

2. AI data centers on the Suncoast: Community meeting draws 150 as North Port schedules expert workshop (mysuncoast.com) — North Port is convening a public workshop on AI data centers Sept. 3, giving residents a chance to hear from utilities and industry experts about energy, water use, and infrastructure impacts. With nearby counties already pausing large data centers, city leaders say they want transparent, informed discussion and are inviting public questions, comments, and survey feedback.

3. WITH VIDEO: Powered paraglider flies low over North Port homes, say he didn't need permission (yoursun.com) — A powered paraglider flew low over homes near South Biscayne Drive in North Port on Tuesday night before landing in a field by Ukrainian Bible Church and quickly leaving. The pilot, identifying himself only as “Drew,” told bystanders he didn’t need permission because his craft is classified as an experimental aircraft, raising questions for neighbors about safety and airspace rules.

4. Flock camera vandalized in Sarasota, first reported case in city (mysuncoast.com) — Police in Sarasota are investigating vandalism of a Flock license plate reader, and note that North Port Police and Sarasota County have seen similar attacks on these cameras. The report explains how the technology aids investigations, while also highlighting privacy concerns and urging residents to address objections through public meetings rather than vandalism.
