📰 News we're reading

1. Do local governments approve data center construction? (suncoastsearchlight.org) — North Port officials are already questioning whether Florida’s SB 180 could limit their ability to pause or restrict new data centers after hurricanes, even though current law generally leaves such decisions to local governments. 3. Amendment 3 promises property tax relief. What would it cost the Suncoast? (mysuncoast.com) — North Port could face some of the steepest budget hits in the region if statewide Amendment 3 passes, potentially forcing cuts to firefighters, police, parks, and libraries or higher local fees. At a Sarasota panel, North Port’s fire chief and other experts warned that the expanded homestead exemption may save typical homeowners around $1,000 but could strip billions from local governments, especially residential communities like North Port.

4. Execution No. 16: Florida Readies Lethal Injection For 77-Year-Old Veteran As Lawyers Fight Clock (tampafp.com) — North Port residents are invited to join a statewide series of vigils Tuesday as Florida prepares to execute 77-year-old Curtis Wilkie Beasley Sr. by lethal injection.
