Palmetto Bay Mayor And Council Meet In Tallahassee For Legislative Agenda

On February 5th and 6th Mayor Cunningham and all members of Council are in Tallahassee, FL to meet with state lawmakers representing Palmetto Bay and members of the Florida House Appropriations Committee to discuss items contained in this year’s legislative agenda. This is the second round of meetings, the first with Mayor Cunningham and Councilmember Matson in January.

2/5/2020 and 2/6/2020: SCHEDULE OF MEETINGS, LAWMAKERS CONTACT LIST

Their agenda includes the following appropriations requests sponsored by State Senator Jose Javier Rodriguez and State Representative Vance Aloupis:

(1) Palmetto Bay Multimodal Transit Station –a. Total Project Cost = $3,245,900b. State Funds Requested = $1,300,000SCOPE: to build a multimodal station as a regional park and ride for county transit services. The park & ride will provide parking to support Miami-Dade County’s Bus Rapid Transit system on the County’s Transitway that will transport residents as far south as Homestead to the S. Dadeland Metrorail Station, which lacks sufficient parking to support the S. Dade commuter ridership. The park & ride will provide approximately 500 parking spaces, on-demand service drop-off & pick-up & other amenities.

(2) Nature Education Center –a. Total Project Cost = $2,245,900b. State Funds Requested = $745,900SCOPE: To capitalize on the existing 20-acre natural pineland preserve area within the 52-acre Coral Reef Park and establish a Nature Education Center to provide educational courses to the general public in an effort to promote conservation of the natural environment. This is particularly important for younger children to learn about nature, the outdoors and environmental protection and capture their interest in environmental conservation from an early age.

(3) Palmetto Bay Sub-Basin #61 Construction –a. Total Project Cost = $847,772b. State Funds Requested = $678,218SCOPE: Palmetto Bay is requesting funding for the construction and construction support for stormwater improvements to its sub-basin #61. Improvements include building additional catch basins, manholes, culverts & exfiltration to connect the catch basins within sub-basin #61. Improvements will reduce pollutant load contribution from 3 main pollutants from the sub-basin into Biscayne Bay Aquifer, control flooding during storms; such as Hurricane Irma and improve surface water quality.
