A Historic Spa, Right Here in Palm Harbor

Wall Springs Park is located at the former location of a natural springs spa and bathing area.

Like many Palm Harbor landmarks, has a very interesting history. The park is located not far off of Alternate 19 in the Crystal Beach/Palm Harbor area.  It is officially located at 3725 De Soto Boulevard.  The park got its name from the original owner of the property Mr. Charles F. Wall, who purchased the original land that contained the natural springs in 1884.  From 1927 to 1948, the area was known as Health Springs until the name was changed back to Wall Springs.

The springs was a very popular place to indulge in rejuvenation, play and to many, healing.  It was a popular bathing spot that included the surrounding pond.  The mineral springs were sometimes thought to be a fountain of youth but more realistically, it was a playground for youth.  The springs were unique because there appeared to be the outline of a woman’s head, if one were to look into the water at just the right angle.  Many people say the image is a trick of the light, where the underground caves begin.  Others say it is haunted.  If you were fortunate enough to see it in person, it was probably a pleasant surprise.

People traveled from all over to make the springs a part of their vacation.  Local hotels sprung up (no pun intended) and catered to the welcomed visitors who brought economic growth to the area.  Locals would head up to the springs to relax and enjoy the attached pool.  Bath houses lined the pool area as early as 1926.  The springs were packed with children and adults on a regular basis.

In the 1920’s, women’s bathing suits covered much of their bodies; their heads encased in fashionable bathing caps that came in colors decorated with large flowers protruding from the sides!  Men afforded much more latitude in their cover ups.  Imagine trying to get a suntan in those getups!

People used the area recreationally until the 1960’s.  In 1988, the county began to purchase the land with the spring until the park grew to about 210 acres in 2009.  The county created a beautiful park. It's a place you'll want to visit at least once in a lifetime.

Today, if you travel to the park, you can walk the boardwalk that skirts the springs, visit the tower to get a great view of the gulf, bicycle or skate on the paths, play football in the front area of the park, tour the springs, and have a picnic at one of the many shelters.  It is a beautiful park with an abundance of friendly wildlife.  You don’t see people jumping into the springs to splash about as they did back in the day but you can stand on the walkway and with your eyes closed, you can almost hear the ghosts of yesteryear’s children laughing and giggling.

Did you know that the Wall family was not the first to enjoy the natural springs?  Indigenous peoples, the local Native Americans, knew of it and used it.
