Is it too costly to be healthy?
A brief description of a visit to a health food store gives the writer a reality check.
I have good eating habits - really I do. However, I would like to eat an even more healthy diet, so armed with enthusiasm, I took my shopping list to a store that specialises in everything from Mung beans to Quinoia flour. It was rather like taking a kid to a candy store. I rushed about uttering little cries of excitement as I found these somewhat strange sounding names. I ask you, where else can you find hemp hearts! The next stage was to learn how to operate the self dispensing tubes emanating from the containers of all these goodies. Note: Remember to place large plastic bag under spout. Special note: Do NOT fill the bag. The reason for this will be made clear later in this blog. Another helpful hint is to write down the name of the item on the special tag you will be given to fasten the bag. Else you'll never remember what you've bought, and believe me they all look vaguely similar when you get them home. I was fired up with good intentions, as I was determined to buy, prepare and toast this 'wonder mix' of sundry seeds, flours and oils to make my very own cereal mix.My basket was eventually filled with plastic bags of millet flakes, golden flax seeds, brown flax seeds, oat bran, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds etc etc to name but a few...topping the list was the portion of hemp hearts. I do realise that my previous experience of hemp anything, included the seeds I used to feed to my budgerigar, or a piece of old rope that I found on the beach - but I was on a mission. Feeling just a little smug, I marched proudly to the checkout, expecting to hear whispers of 'My, I bet she's REALLY healthy - look at what she's buying!). All I heard though was the sound of the register ringing up my purchases, and then I looked at the total! They really should have an EMT on hand at these stores or at least provide small paper bags for the inevitable panic attack- I may have marched in, but by gosh, I tottered out. I'm not sure if I couldn't have done better buying a few bags of bird seed, and sorting out the different seeds, but nevertheless, I tried hard to convince my credit card to leave my wallet so that I could pay, and took my purchases home.I spent most of the afternoon weighing, mixing and toasting this 'wonder mix' and putting it in zip lock bags. Now I have to find a special container with a padlock....as this cereal is worth big bucks. I am dishing out portions by tablespoon if I know and like you, otherwise it's teaspoon quantities. Why is it SOOOOO expensive to be healthy! Pass the french fries!
