Will You Be My Valentine?

A wish for Valentine's Day. Those who do and those who don't get Valentines.

I'm sorry, I feel that Valentine's Day is specifically tailored for "the beautiful people" amongs us.

How many of us have sat waiting for the mail to arrive on Feb. 14th with baited breath in the hope that someone, ANY one, will have sent us a Valentine? All the Cheerleader/Quarterback types will have a nonchalant attitude as they wade through the myriad of cards from hopefuls, while the less attractive of us would  pay to get even one card.

It's not important to know the sender, it's just important to be a receiver.  Sending out cards just does not give one the same sense of belonging. There have been many Feb .13th's during my school days when I have spent my allowance on treats for all the less prepossessing of my friends, even the most disliked students in my class, in the vain hope that they might, just might, consider sending me a Valentine card.

As you have probably guessed, the result was a walloping absence of anything remotely like a card in the mail box. The only result was that all those who were the 'last person' to be chosen for anything would suddenly decide that I was their final refuge and sit at my lunch table, or save me a seat next to them on the bus, thus preventing me from ever moving up the social ladder. Serves me right!

Howsoever (I love that phrase), I have yet to sink to the depths of having my pet send a Valentine card to pets of my friends. Bad enough when ones pet gets an invite to a birthday party of a neighbor's pet.  I am living in expectation that 'Fluffy' or 'Fido' will send out invites listing the pet supply stores where they are 'registered'.

Heaven help us when puppy or kitten showers start to be the in thing. If ones pet is snubbed by not being included, will one have to watch out for cyber pet bullying next? So come on...'fess up...how many of you have special e-mail accounts for your pets?

You may think I jest, but that time is not far off. In the meantime, I will smile at the local tradespeople, even the ones who obviously hate their job and will take it out on any poor soul who crosses their path, in the vain hope that maybe they want to send me a Valentine. Also, the person who snitched my parking space in the shade because their car was older and more scratched up than mine (and she was MUCH bigger than me), need NOT bother.

Her Valentine may have words in it that are not appropriate. Mine to her would certainly not have hearts and flowers. Blackmailing ones children into sending one a card doesn't count. That could be construed as child abuse, but occasionally, as yet another Feb 14th comes and goes and all that is in ones mailbox are bills, circulars and unsolicited mail, the thought does cross ones mind to maybe not want to cough up for this and that demanded item.

After all, if one is unloved enough to not warrant a measly Valentine—well they will just have to suffer the consequences. On the other hand, receiving an anonymous Valentine's day card has a certain thrill level. Providing it is not followed up with begging letters that is.

I will wait for the mail tomorrow on Feb 14th in a state of excitement to see if someone out there wants me to be their Valentine. By the way, I have a bridge in Arizona to sell for a very reasonable price.
