Firefighters Remind Drivers to Slow Down in School Zones

School starts August 20. Authorities want you to drive carefully in school zones.

Palm Harbor Firefighter’s will be at the intersections of , , and to remind drivers to slow down in the school zones and watch for kids who may be crossing the street, according to Palm Harbor Fire Rescue Spokesperson Liz Monforti.

The speed limit in school zones is lower than in other areas to ensure the safety of children. Deputies with the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office frequently patrol school zones. Speeding in a school zone can bring a hefty fine in addition to putting children and crossing guards in danger.

  • $156: 1-9 m.p.h. over the speed limit
  • $306: 10-14 m.p.h. over the speed limit
  • $406: 15-19 m.p.h. over the speed limit
  • $456: 20-29 m.p.h. over the speed limit
  • Mandatory Court Appearance: 30 m.p.h. and higher over the speed limit
