Lifestyle Family Fitness to Close Oct. 1

Palm Harbor's is notifying members that the gym will close for good at 2 p.m. on Oct. 1. A sign posted at the gym's front desk informs members about the closure.

A manager at the gym would not provide details about the closure and referred Patch to corporate headquarters. So far, no one has responded to inquiries made by Patch.

LA Fitness recently acquired most of the Lifestyle Family Fitness Clubs in Florida. According to the LA Fitness website, the transaction was completed July 2. The website also says that Lifestyle Family Fitness members will be able to use LA Fitness gyms. There is an, which is less than one mile away from the Lifestyle Family Fitness.

LA Fitness has also not responded to inquiries made by Patch asking what will happen to employees at the Palm Harbor Lifestyle Family Fitness. , Lifestyle Family Fitness filed a notice with the state of Florida that it planned to lay off 94 workers between Aug. 16 and Dec. 31 of this year.  

The closure of Lifestyle Family Fitness did not seem to bother gym members who spoke with Patch Friday.

"It doesn't really make any difference to me. A gym's a gym to me," said Scott MacIsaac, 39, who has been a member of Lifestyle Family Fitness for five years. MacIsaac lives in Oldsmar and says he will not mind driving a few extra blocks up U.S. 19 to LA Fitness.

Larry Hinyub, 57, of Palm Harbor, was already planning on switching gyms.

"I'm not going to be going to this one much longer anyway. I'm on a Silver Sneakers program with Medicare and they won't cover this facility since it was bought out by LA Fitness, so I'll be going to the Y," said Hinyub.

"The Y's nice, it's got an Olympic-sized pool. It's got most of the same equipment. It's gonna be the same five-minute drive from the house for me," he said.

We did some checking online and it appears that LA Fitness does not participate in the Silver Sneakers program.

• LA Fitness will be honoring all of the active membership agreements that it purchased from Lifestyle Family Fitness. 
• All active Lifestyle Family Fitness multi-club memberships will be honored at their current rate, and these multi-club members will have access to all Lifestyle Family Fitness locations acquired by LA Fitness. 
• Similarly, all active single club members will be honored at their current rate with the same access they have now to the Lifestyle Family Fitness location where they joined.
