Palm Harbor Dermatology is pleased to announce that Utpal Patel, M.D, Ph.D. has joined the thriving medical practice. By adding Dr. Patel, Palm Harbor Dermatology now has two Fellowship-trained Mohs surgeons as part of its exceptionally skilled staff.
Drs. Patel and Amy Ross, the practice’s founder, are among the few Mohs certified surgeons in the Tampa Bay region. The advanced training in Mohs surgery allows Palm Harbor Dermatology to provide skin cancer patients with a highly effective treatment option that is less invasive and typically results in less scarring than other skin cancer treatment methods.
“Dr. Patel’s extensive training in Mohs certification, along with his research background, helps us to better serve our patients with the most up-to-date techniques and cutting-edge technology,” said Dr. Ross, president of Palm Harbor Dermatology. “The addition of another experienced Mohs surgeon means that more people on the Gulf Coast are able to receive this treatment for skin cancer.”
Prior to joining Palm Harbor Dermatology, Dr. Patel completed his American College of Mohs Surgery (ACMS) approved Mohs surgery fellowship training at Laser and Dermatologic Surgery Center, Inc. in Chesterfield, Mo. His fellowship training and advanced research in the field of dermatology adds greatly to Palm Harbor Dermatology’s efficacy of care and opens the door to the possibility of offering experimental treatments, which could help patients see quicker results.
Dr. Patel currently serves as a peer reviewer for four dermatology journals: Dermatologic Surgery, Journal of Drugs in Dermatology, Journal of American Association of Dermatology and Journal of Cosmetic and Laser Therapy. He has been published in a number of leading peer-reviewed medical journals, notably Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology, Clinics in Plastic Surgery, British Journal of Dermatology, Journal of Drugs in Dermatology and Journal of Biological Chemistry.
Dr. Patel has helped to establish a nationally recognized standard of care and best practices for the field of dermatology as a member of the American Academy of Dermatology’s Clinical Guidelines and Research Committee during a two-year term. He is also active in many professional medical societies: American Association of Dermatology, American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery and Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society.
The lauded doctor has been the recipient of several awards and grants, notably the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery Preceptorship Award and the Health Research Formula Grant Fellowship from the Pennsylvania Department of Health. He has also led presentations at national dermatologic conferences, including the annual meeting of American Academy of Dermatology in February 2011 and the Advances in Dermatology symposium in June 2010.
