Be Prepared and Be Safe in the Water

Swimming is fun, but it can be dangerous. Here are a few tips to keep you safe.

Summer is finally here and it's time to hit up the beach and get in the waves. Safety should always be paramount when swimming though, and we've got a top five checklist of ways to stay safe while swimming.

  1. Don't Drink and Swim: It may sound like a fun idea to grab a drink at Caddy's and go for a dip, but it can also be one of the most harmful things you can do. With your decreased reaction and motor skills from drinking, entering the water can be dangerous.
  2. Wear a Life Jacket: If you're going out on a boat and you aren't a strong swimmer, always wear a life jacket. They may not be the highest fashion item on the market, but it can keep you afloat in troubled waters.
  3. Always Swim in the Designated Areas: The designated beach areas are wide enough that you can find a spot not crowded by people. There's never any reason to go beyond the zones where the water can get more dangerous.
  4. Keep a lookout for Marine Life: When you go in the water, you're a visitor. There are lots of creatures who make the water their home, so be on the lookout for them. Always remember the Stingray Shuffle!
  5. Check Conditions: If you can see it's going to be a high wave sort of day, plan your beach trip on another day. There's plenty of summer and delaying a beach day can keep you safe from the first step.
